Anti-January 17 Demonstrations Comedy On MBC Tv: Portrays Organisers As Thieves

The state controlled Malawi Broadcasting Cooperation Television (MBCtv) has started beaming comedy slots that are aimed at discouraging the youth from participating in the next week’s demonstrations.

In a 15 minutes episode titled ‘zionetsero??’, the two comedians Precious Denja and Isaac Bonongwe, trading under the banner ‘Chopwicho’ are sarcastically urging the demonstration organisers, Consumers Association of Malawi (Cama) to show their anger against high cost of living by hiking the Mulanje mountain not protesting in the streets as doing so is only showing that they are thieves not demonstrators.

The two comedians also urged John Kapito, who is the chief face of the demonstrations to “consider running for a parliamentary seat, not hiding behind the consumer rights advocating body to advance his political agenda”

They said “Cama should speak against price disparities in the country’s most retail shops to prove that it has the welfare of consumers at heart other than mobilising thieves to go and loot other peoples’ business entities as was the case in the last demonstrations.”

However, contrary to the natural rules of video production, the comedy slot is not revealing figures behind its production apart from identifying the camera man as Chimwemwe.

It is silent on who wrote the script, producer, executive producer even its sponsors.

Isnt this the same path the DPP took to counter the July 20 demos?the end result was a massive turn out.Malawi politicians are trash. They never learn from past mistakes.

By countering the demo thru mass media,Dont they know they are advertising/promoting the demos for free?dunderheads at MBC and at Peoples Party!

If our Head of State can stop maize and flour distributions to PP supporters then let us rethink perhaps she has started to listen otherwise bravo Kapito and let us go in the streets.

  10. Gundumulani  January 10, 2013 at 2:00 pm

Distribution of maize and flour to PP supportre by the Head of State JB should stop immediately otherwise it is good to demonstrate in the streets.

Patriot, consumers will be marching based on six issues in their petition to government. One of the issues is the high cost of living but there are other reasons too of which some are frequency of travel locally and internationally by HE and cabinet members; maize distribution campaigns; declaration of assets by the highest office and related issues; bloating rather than trimming of cabinet; and executive arrogance. To argue that these issues are not important to Malawians then you must be foolish in the head. I am very sure the demos will reshape thinking of the executive branch and start doing things right. If you are well off then lucky you but know this…even rich people can get people so suddenly and God does this by sending them important visitors..ever heard about Job in the Holy Bible? Think twice otherwise what you are doing is adding more coal to the fire! You are provoking rather than reasoning with the aggrieved parties to the demos. Think wise be wise my brother

And you told me this silly Broadcasting Corporation changed? My foot!

    • Patriot  January 10, 2013 at 11:58 am

O yes, it has changed and a lot.
It is no longer controlled by that uneducated “Disc Jockey” Malopa.
It is no longer controlled by Peter with his “way to 2014” programme.
It is no longer controlled by DPP with their STUPID pulbic lectures.
It is no longer controlled by DPP comedians like Winiko.
I bet you forgot already that just b4 5 April 2011, TVM was controlled by DPP?
      This was just a reminder.
