FEBRUARY 3, MANA: Wild life and Natural Resource Conservation and Rehabilitation Trust (WNRCRT) Director, Lonjezo Mwale has encouraged Primary and Secondary School students to plant more trees in efforts to mitigate adverse effects of Climate Change.
Speaking during harmony International Week celebration at Chinsapo Primary school in Lilongwe, she said it was time students took a leading role in conserving natural resources.
“I think as youth, we need to take a leading role in caring for our natural resources which God gave as for free. This harmony International week is for us to come together and brainstorm how best we can conserve our natural resources, and our particular purpose for holding it here at Chinsapo school is to lead by example through planting trees and encourage the pupils and the surrounding communities to follow suit.” Mwale said.
She said as they continue with the tree planting campaign in selected schools around Lilongwe they would take along environmental education to help the youth understand how to take care of trees and their surrounding natural resources.
Chinsapo Youth Network (CYN) Chairperson, Misheck Likupe decried the extent people have contributed to the adverse effects of climate change.
“We are facing a lot of problems of climate change due to our carelessness; people are cutting down trees anyhow which is one factor of Climate Change.
“As youth, we are proud to be part of this exercise to restore our natural resources by planting more trees,” he added.
Likupe pointed out that it was everyone responsibility to take care of trees.
Commenting on the development, Chinsapo Primary School learner, Sumia Austin said she felt good to be one of the pupils in tree planting exercise.
“I will encourage my fellow pupils to take good care of these trees we have planted today. Trees bring fresh air around our communities and protect us from floods which may come due to heavy rains.” Austin said.
The Exercise is expected to last for week in six schools namely Chinsapo Primary and Secondary School, Dali Private School, Likuni Boys Secondary and Chankhadwe Primary school.
Over 3,000 trees are expected to be planted in the six Schools during the tree planting exercise.
