The Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) has opened a Voluntary Compliance Window (VCW) for tax defaulters following President Professor Peter Mutharika’s directive on Saturday as a measure of fighting the spread of Covid-19.
Malawi President Professor Mutharika issued the order after Malawi registered a fourth case of Covid-19.
VCW will give an opportunity to tax defaulters to pay their taxes under the Voluntary Compliance Window (VCW) without paying penalties or facing criminal charges as Per Mutharika’s directive.
According to a memo signed by MRA’s Commissioner General Tom Gray Malata the VCM will open from 30th April to 30th September 2020.
Malata said the window aims at increasing Voluntary Tax Compliance and to broaden tax net.
“During the period tax payers who owe MRA tax arrears and those have not been compliant, will be allowed to apply to participate.
“When the application is approved, the person will be required to pay a principal amount only while penalties, interest and other charges will be waived,” said Malata
Government critics and Opposition Political parties have since commended President Mutharika for taking bold steps in the fight against the spread of Covid-19 in the country.
