Malawi’s Private broadcaster Zodiak Broadcasting Station (ZBS) has apologized to Malawians for spreading fake news through its official facebook page.
The apology came barely hours the station published unverified and false article claiming that Aircraft flying Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) lawyers from South Africa was denied airspace in Mozambique.
In a statement ZBS’s Director of News and Current Affairs, admitted the information published was not verified.
“We relayed information that we now find to have been wrong and unverified. We implied, in the post, that two lawyers hired by the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) were travelling to Malawi by air and had a fuel-refill landing in Mozambique.
“The truth of the matter is that no such a thing happened. As a media house that has built huge public trust in Malawi and beyond for relaying correct information, we retract that post in its entirety and apologies most sincerely for any inconvenience that it must have caused,” reads the statement in part.
Recently, Malawi President Professor Peter Mutharika warned Malawians against spreading false news on the social media.
