ActionAid Malawi Warns Public Against Fraudsters

By Ireen Kayira, MANA

ActionAid Malawi has warned the public against fraudsters who it says are parading themselves as ActionAid staff and collecting money from people on promise of job offer and grants.

In a press statement ActionAid Malawi released on April 13, the organisation said it has come to its attention that there are some individuals masquerading as ActionAid staff that go around to solicit money and other forms of bribes from unsuspecting individuals and institutions on promise of grants and jobs.

“ActionAid Malawi would like to disassociate itself from such fraudsters and the organisation will not hesitate to take legal action against such individuals if found indulging in criminal activities in the name of ActionAid,” reads the statement in part.

The statement furthers says since the organisation started operating in Malawi in 1991, ActionAid has always abided by its corrupt–free and non-discriminatory policies on procurement, partner engagement and recruitment.

“In line with the prevailing laws of Malawi, ActionAid Malawi does not demand any favour or bribes in its recruitment, procurement, grant or any engagement,” reads the statement signed by the organisation’s Executive Director, Assan Golowa.

The organisation, therefore, has appealed to the public that if they come across any person engaging in the corrupt practice or professional misconduct in the name of ActionAid, they should report to the organisation.
