The Opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP) and its political bedfellow UTM Party thugs on Saturday vandalized Luwinga Technical Centre in Mzuzu barely days after Football Association of Malawi (FAM) handed to government to be used as Quarantine centre.
MCP-UTM thugs who were led by MCP ward Councillor for Luwinga, Desire Nyirenda, who is also Deputy Mayor for Mzuzu City were protesting FAM’s decision of turning the facility into Covid-19 Quarantine Centre.
The thugs blocked the road from Mzuzu to Nkhorongo where they burnt an undisclosed number of beds that were delivered at the centre in readiness for the exercise special thanks to police who feared teargas to disperse them.
“Some beds have been burnt so we are still assessing the damages,” confirmed Lovemore Kawaye, spokesperson for Mzimba North District Health Office spokesperson.
Reacting to the development, FAM’ General Secretary Alfred Gunda said: “Our gesture was out of goodwill and it is sad that it has not been well received. It was needless for the community to vandalize the property instead of engaging relevant authorities to raise their concerns.”
Gunda added: “Our offer still stands for the support of the Malawi population during this pandemic where we need to come together to fight against the coronavirus and we hope the matter will be resolved amicably,”
Meanwhile, Malawi has registered a total number of 38 confirmed cases of Covid-19, including three deaths.
