The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has rejected a request by Malawi Congress Party (MCP) President Lazarus Chakwera to change ballot paper symbol.
On 13th May, MCP’s Presidential candidate Reverend Chakwera applied to MEC to allow the party to change ballot symbol to include the prints used by the UTM-MCP alliance.
MEC’s Chairperson Justice Dr. Jane Ansah rejected the request on the grounds that MCP failed to notify the registrar of political parties on any changes on symbols.
“The distinctive symbol of the party was submitted and approved by the Registrar of Political Parties under Section 12 (2) (v) of the Political Parties Act.
The Commission has not been made aware of any change to this particular aspect as approved by the Registrar of Political Parties,” said Ansah
Malawi will hold fresh presidential elections on 2 July 2020 following the nullification of May 2019 presidential elections.
