Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Ben Phiri said Malawians should not make a mistake of voting into power a party which
voted against multiparty democracy in 1994.
Dr. Phiri, who is also Director of Elections for Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), was speaking on Sunday in Neno district during a campaign whistle stop tour.
According to Dr Phiri, MCP which is leading the MCP-UTM alliance does not form any democratic principles that can govern a democratic country like Malawi.
“During the MCP’s era, there was no room for democracy at all, people’s rights were infringed and innocent people were being killed like chickens by party officials,” said Phiri
In his response, MCP spokesperson Reverend Maurice Munthali admitted that the Party was indeed killing people.
“Indeed we were killing innocent people during our rule…..but this is a reformed MCP,” admitted Rev Munthali.
Malawi will hold fresh presidential elections on 2 July 2020 after the Court nullified 21 May 2019 elections.
