The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) Commissioner, Dr. Jean Mathanga on Tuesday vowed not to resign as the commissioner for the country’s electoral body.
Commissioner Dr. Mathanga, who is also the Chairperson for MEC’s Electoral Services Committee, made the remarks during a media briefing held in Lilongwe.
“The answer is I am not resigning. I will continue discharging my duties to the end of 15th June which is a matter of few weeks from now,” said Dr. Mathanga adding that she is ‘competent’.
Dr. Mathanga also appealed to electoral stakeholders to always engage the commission on any matter relating to elections saying the commission is always committed.
“Without suppressing dissent and freedom of expression, it would be advisable if stakeholders engage the commission before making outbursts and misinformed allegations in the media.
“It is not in the interest of the Commission to be exposing ignorance of its stakeholders on electoral issues like we will be doing. These scenarios can be avoided if there are constant consultations,” said Dr Mathanga
Malawi will hold fresh presidential elections on 2 July 2020 following the nullification of May 2019 Presidential elections.
Please leave these money hungry poor commissioners alone nobody should touch them….if attacked they will use that as an excuse to delay or cancel the elections
They have lost all the court cases and keeping their jobs until June 5 is the only victory they are hoping for….Monga mukudziwa mavuto azachuma pa Malawi.
They know that their careers are finished forever, if DPP can’t win who is gonna give them a job in Malawi? Their CVs are so soiled and the retirement package from MEC is their only hope they have please do not take this away from these desperate souls otherwise some of them will kill themselves.
