Member of Parliament for Nkhatabay Central Symon Vuwa Kaunda has written the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) demanding a whopping K600 Million compensation.
Through his lawyers, Mbuno Attorneys, Kaunda says he has suffered physical, psychological and economic torture to defend and reclaim his election victory.
Kaunda argues all this happened due to MEC’s negligence and recklessness and has since threatened legal action if the sum is not paid in 14 days.
In April this year, the Supreme Court of Malawi ordered that there should be fresh election in Nkhatabay Central following an appeal from People’s Party Ralph Mhone who claimed that the 2019 parliamentary elections were not free and fair hence the re-run.
Fast forward, on 29 June Opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) lawmaker Vuwa Kaunda retained the his seat after winning the fresh parliamentary polls.
Kaunda won back his seat i with 5439 votes to 5223 votes for Ralph Mhone of Tonse Alliance, which comprises nine political parties.
