Police in Dedza district are keeping in custody a 22-year old man for trying to rape his 24-year old sister.
Dedza Police Deputy Publicist, Cassim Manda, identified the suspect as Sitifano Yosefi of Chimpikizo village in the area of Traditional Authority Kamenyagwaza in the district.
He said the incident occurred on Sunday at around 9 O’clock in the evening as the sister was fast asleep in his matrimonial bed.
“The victim (name withheld) decided to go to bed after she got tired of waiting for her husband who was not at home at that particular time.
As the victim was fast asleep, she felt that someone was caressing her body. After some minutes, the victim was waken up, and she thought what was happening was just a mere dream,” said Manda
Manda added: “The victim later noticed that, the person who was fondling her body was her brother Sitifano from another mother.
The victim told the suspect that what he was doing was an abomination and unethical.
With a lower voice, Sitifano romantically told her that he had intensive sexual inclination and that he wanted to have sex with her only for that day.”
Furious with his reply, the victim caught him tightly and shouted for help. But before people came to the scene, the suspect overpowered her and ran away.
The victim reported the matter to village headman Chimpikizo where Sitifano was summoned. As matter was beyond his jurisdiction, Chimpikizo later referred both victim and suspect to Dedza Police Station where Sitifano was locked in custody for indecent assault.
Preliminary investigation has shown that, early this year Sitifano was also caught attempting to defile his biological sister but the case was not reported to police after elders of the family sorted it out at family level.
