The Ntchisi First Grade Magistrate’s Court has sentenced Edson Sitambuli, 34, to six years in jail for stealing cash amounting to K5000.
The court through State prosecutor, Virginia Kachepa, heard that Sitambuli beat up the victim Jenadi Tchalasi, 68, before snatching a plastic bag from him at 9 Miles trading centre in the district.
Sitambuli then took K5000 from the victim’s pocket and escaped, leaving the victim unconscious. The suspect was later apprehended by members of community policing forum.
According to Ntchisi police station Public Relations Officer, Yohane Tasowana, the court found Sitambuli guilty of robbery contrary to Section 301(1) of the Penal code.
In his mitigation, the suspect pleaded with the court to be lenient, saying he did it under the influence of alcohol. He asked the court to allow him pay back the money and be set free.
However, according to Tasowana, the court proceeded to give the convict a custodial sentence.
