Police in Nsanje are hunting for Peter Tembo, nicknamed Chikwama Wallet, who escaped from lawful custody on Wednesday.
According to Nsanje Police Station spokesperson, Agnes Zalakoma, the suspect was arrested for alleged house breaking and appeared in court on Wednesday.
She further said the escape happened when he was being taken back to Nsanje Prison by police officers on foot, together with other suspects.
Zalakoma said upon reaching Nsanje Prison Ground the suspect managed to ‘uncuff’ himself and ran away.
”The suspect jumped onto a motorcycle which had stopped at a distance, after which, it immediately sped off,” said Zalakoma
According to the police, all efforts to go after the motorcycle proved futile. She also added that a key that was used to unlock the handcuffs was found on the scene.
The suspect Tembo, 26, hails from Nthukuso Village in the area of Senior Chief Malemia, in the district.
