Karonga death toll rises to 24 – Police

Police have confirmed the death of 7 more people involved in Nyungwe United Football Club’s road accident in Karonga district.

They died while receiving treatment at Karonga District Hospital, bringing the death toll to 24.

“The number of dead bodies at Karonga District Hospital regarding the fatal road accident is now at 24.” confirmed Sergeant George Mulewa, Public Relations Officer of Karonga Police Station

On Saturday night, Nyungwe FC players and supporters were involved in a fatal road accident which killed 17 people on the spot, leaving 12 others in serious injuries after the vehicle they were travelling in overturned in Tenenthe Hills in Karonga District.

A total of 80 passengers were travelling in a ten-tonner lorry registration number NA 6449 driven by Moes Mkandawire,43.

Police indicated that the vehicle overturned and hit the road embarkment when the driver failed to negotiate the left bend.

The team was returning from the 2023 FAM Moto Division One match against Chitipa Hammers football club played at Jombajomba football ground in Chitipa district.

The accident as saddened the Malawi football fraternity as fans and clubs have described the accident as huge loss.

Minister of Youth and Sports, Uchizi Mkandawire has since sent a message of condolences to the bereaved families, Northern Region Football Association (NRFA), and the entire football fraternity.
