Minister of Local Government, Unity and Culture Richard Chimwendo Banda has today lauded the Habitat for Humanity for its sound policies in reducing poverty in Malawi by providing shelter to homeless and those who live in slums thereby laying a solid foundation for economic transformation of the country.
The Minister was speaking at a panel discussion he held today with President of Habitat for Humanity Jonathan Reckford in Nairobi, Kenya.
On the panel, Chimwendo was accompanied by Malawi’s Minister of Lands Deus Gumba.
In his remarks, Chimwendo said the organization has contributed significantly to the social and economic growth of the country by providing affordable housing which are solid foundation for meeting development goals as such reducing poverty.
“Government of Malawi appreciates the charitable works this Christian organization is doing to ultra poor Malawians by providing sound housing and social policy especially by building affordable housing and supporting people with low – income through partnerships and mortgages.
“As that is not enough the organization continues to provide basic needs such as provisions of good health facilities, school block construction among others, ” said Chimwendo Banda who is also Leader of Government Business in Parliament.
Chimwendo further said the country is in rebuilding exercise after facing natural disasters such as cyclone Freddy, COVID-19 among others which have ripple effects on the lives poor Malawians thereby destroying the landscape of the economy and it now depending on charitable organizations like Habitat for Humanity to partner with government in its quest to reshape the country.
In his remarks, Minister of Lands Deus Gumba stressed the need for more support from the organization in areas of technology and digitisation in schools.
Taking his turn, President of the organization Jonathan Reckford pledged his support to the government of Malawi to help the elderly, orphan and the vulnerable from adverse conditions by providing them with affordable housing, pumping funds in developmental projects, such as schools and health facilities among others.
He has also urged government to make tough laws regarding land laws to protect the elderly and orphans from perpetuators of land grabbing.
Chimwendo Banda and Gumba are in Kenya attending the Second Session of UN Habitat for Humanity Assembly.
