Lilongwe June 9: Government has hailed the United States of America (USA) government for its efforts in advancing social and economic development, strengthening democratic institutions and promoting good governance in the country.
Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs, Sosten Gwengwe made the remarks in Lilongwe on Thursday, during the commemoration of the 247th anniversary of the Independence of the USA and the Anniversary of the Juneteenth.
“Our relationship with the United States holds immense value to the people of Malawi, the exchange of the expertise and resources has empowered our nation and contributed to the well-being of our people,” he said.
He said the US continues to be a developmental partner to Malawi as demonstrated by its active engagement in various programmes notably the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) five-year bilateral assistance agreement with Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs aimed at supporting the realization of Malawi Vision 2063.
The minister also outlined other multiple development sectors such as the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) which improved the energy sector saying Malawi anticipates the successful implementation of the main projects outlined in the Second Compact, which covers land productivity and Accelerated Growth Corridors project.
Gwengwe also lauded the US government for addressing urgent humanitarian needs as exemplified by the assistance the American government extended to Malawi in the wake of the destructive aftermath of Tropical Cyclone Freddy and combating cholera outbreak.
US Ambassador to Malawi, David Young said the US government will continue supporting government through programmes such as PEPFAR to make a difference in people’s lives.
He said the commemoration of the US national day symbolises friendship and cooperation between Malawi and USA.
