FISHING OUT CORRUPTION: Citizens to Hold Vigils at MRA Offices in Blantyre

A group trading under the banner Concerned Citizens of Malawi has threatened to hold vigils at Malawi Revenue Authority head offices in Blantyre.

The grouping is being led by vocal rights activists Oliver Nakoma, Edward Kambanje and Pastor Victor Nyanyaliwa.

Vice Chairperson for the group, Edward Kambanje confirmed the development in an interview With Malawi Voice on Saturday saying the vigils will take place on June 23, 2023.

“We are planning to hold vigils at MRA head office and Sunseed Oil Limited in Blantyre against social ills and high levels of corruption happening at the institution,” said Kambanje

Among others, the group is accusing some MRA officials of conniving with Indians of Malawian origin to defraud Malawi government huge sums of money through tax invasions.

Kambanje said: “We received a tip from citizens regarding corruption between MRA officials and Indians of Malawian origin,”

Meanwhile, both officials from MRA and Indians of Malawian origin are yet to comment on the allegations leveled against them by the Concerned Citizens of Malawi.

MRA is an agency of the Government of Malawi responsible for assessment, collection and accounting for tax revenues.
