Machinjiri Business Operators Petition Blantyre City Council Over Mthawira Market…to hold vigils at State House

Small Business Operators in Machinjiri have written the Blantyre City Council (BCC) to construct Mthawira market, four years after they were reportedly promised of the facility.

The people initially held a demonstration around the area on Thursday morning before presenting a petition to the city council in which they have detailed their concerns.

Among other things, leader of the members, Chipulumutso Phiri, said they were reportedly promised of the facility in 2018 but the council has not yet pushed for the construction.

“Since the city stopped people from constructing shops at Mthawira Trading Centre claiming that  they will construct a market for us in 2018, nothing tangible has been done, forcing people to do business along the roads and some in their homes,” said Phiri

The grouping has since given the council 7 working days to act of their demand failing which, according to Phiri, they will no other option but to hold vigils at Sanjika Palace in Blantyre.

Meanwhile, officials from Blantyre City Council (BCC) are yet to comment on the development.
