Government has assured the business people in Karonga District that it will quickly find a solution that guarantees their freedom to engage in business without compromising the fight against smuggling and illegal exportation of agricultural produce, Minister of Local Government, Unity and Culture Chimwendo Banda has disclosed.
Chimwendo was speaking last night at Karonga Boma when he met business people who have been complaining that the Chilumba Barracks soldiers are trampling on their rights to do businesses by among other things confesticating their produce without following proper channels and yet they have proper documents from the Ministry of Trade and Industry to do cross boarder trade.
In his remarks, Chimwendo said government has noted their concerns and that relevant government machinery will come up with mechanisms on how best they can resolve the misunderstanding while urging the traders to also respect the rule of law.
“It is the responsibility of the government to give full support to the enterprises and businesses of the country,” said Chimwendo Banda who is also MCP National Youth Director.
Chilumba Barracks road block has been in running battles with the business community in Karonga after snatching their produce.
Chimwendo was accompanied by Minister of Youth and Sports engineer Uchizi Mkandawire who is also MP for Karonga South Constituency.
