Malawi President Lazarus Chakwera has returned from China, where he attended the 3rd China-Africa Economic and Trade Expo.
Chakwera was welcomed at the Kamuzu International Airport in Lilongwe by country’s Vice President Saulos Chilima and top government officials.
Speaking upon his arrival, Chakwera said there is a need for the Malawi government to take swift action on the agreements and MOUs that have been signed between the two nations in order for them to be effectively implemented.
Chakwera also mentioned that he had the opportunity to meet with the Vice President of the People’s Republic of China, Han Zheng, where they held bilateral talks on how they can collaborate to improve the economy, trade, agriculture, and other sectors between the two countries.
The Malawi government has also received a donation of US$150,000 (K158 million) as a means of assisting in the nation’s rebuilding efforts following the aftermath of Cyclone Freddy and has signed MOUs with Huawei Technologies in the field of ICT connection, E-government, smart education, ICT talent training, and cybersecurity.
These initiatives aim to provide solutions for renewable energy, which plays a crucial role in boosting the economy.
This year’s Expo focused on nine program areas: medical and health, poverty reduction, agricultural development, trade promotion, investment promotion, digital innovation, green development, capacity building, cultural and people-to-people exchange, and peace and security.
The expo was held under the theme “Common Development for a shared future”.
