Huge concern over sudden alteration of charges against VP Dr Saulos Chilima

BY BASHIR AL BASHIR

In a curious twist of events, the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) of Malawi is frantically looking into modifying the charges against Dr Saulos Chilima, the Vice President of Malawi. This decision comes a year after the bureau initially declared the completion of its investigations in May 2022.

The frantic search for stronger charges against VP Chilima comes ahead of a scheduled court hearing for variation of his bail conditions and following an earlier order by the Court requiring ACB to disclose its evidence to the defence team The ACB had lamented that it did not have the disclosures ready, over one year after completing investigations and needed time to prepare them, which the Court allowed

This sudden alteration of charges has sparked concerns and speculation regarding the motives and fairness of the investigation and the rush to frame charges which now ACB appears to be doubting. The ACB has stated that they are taking this step after realizing that the charges they had previously brought against the Vice President were not supported by the evidence they have gathered, an inside source revealed.
