Malawi’ Ben Phiri Elected Chairperson Of Southern-Eastern African Parliamentary Caucus On SRHR

Former minister and parliament for Thyolo Central Dr. Benson Malunga Phiri has been Elected Chairperson for Sexual and Reproductive Health Right(SRHR) for the recently formed Southern And Eastern African Parliamentary Caucus at a meeting underway in Kigali ,Rwanda.

Phiri will be deputized by Hon Memory Bondia of Zimbabwe while Zambia has produced the Secretary General in the name of Hon Mwamboo Muntinta , Tanzania’s Hon Hawa Mchafu will deputize the secretary General and Eswathini’s Hon Laureen Nxumalo will seat in the caucus as Treasure General.

Speaking to this publication after the elections, Phiri said he was grateful to have been given the enormous responsibility of leading the recently formed Southern and Eastern African Parliamentary Caucus on SRHR as it will shape him as a leader beyond the boarder.

The caucus comprise over 19 member countries from Southern and Eastern Africa and among its areas of speciality is expanding access to healthcare, promoting education, lowering infant and maternal mortality rates, preventing teenage pregnancies, managing population growth, and promoting sustainable development.

Phiri added that the issues that we face as African continent are enormous, and as Leaders , there is need to step up.

” I have learned a lot today while presiding over my first meeting in Kigali, Rwanda, which was held alongside the Women Delivers 23.” Phiri concluded.
