Minister of Local government, Unity and Culture says President Dr Lazarus Chakwera hope for economic revival after series of shocks such as COVID-19 scourge, cyclones, and others hinges on informal sector including vendors who play a critical role in the economy including tax revenues, employment among others hence a need of cordial relationship between government through city authorities and them.
He was speaking to reporters today after the yesterday’s tag of war that erupted in Limbe between vendors and city authorities.
In his remarks Chimwendo announced that Chakwera through his ministry has directed pause of evicting vendors from the streets. The pause is for 45 days to allow both parties to engage in a cordial dialogue.
“As government, we realize the importance of the small traders, small entrepreneurs, local artists and artisans to the economy of the country.
“It’s therefore, the president’s wish that regulations must he applied in a way that will empower our people than burdening them as most Malawians are already on the receiving end of the financial woes,” said Chimwendo Banda who is also leader of government business in Parliament.
He added that those that are in the informal sector are selling products to support the livelihoods of their households and as government we must support them to meet their needs and aspirations.
Yesterday, there were running battles between vendors and City authorities in Limbe.
Meanwhile, government has ordered police and city authorities to allow vendors conduct their businesses in the streets while they adhere to the city by-laws.
