….A Malawi si anthu owafera !
Handful protesters, who have been outnumbered by heavily armed police officers, are this morning demonstrating against kwacha devaluation and social-economic ills in the country.
The peaceful demonstrations are being led by controversial human rights activist cum comedian Bon Winiko Kalindo.
The ‘peaceful but angry’ protesters who are singing Anti-president Dr. Lazarus Chakwera’s administrating songs are expected to deliver a petition to Blantyre district commissioner.
In an interview Kalindo said Malawians are facing challenges to feed themselves and their dependents due to the rise in prices of goods and services due to the devaluation.
In a statement, RBM Governor Wilson Banda said the 44 percent devaluation followed the imbalances as well as the mismatch in the exchange rate in cash and telegraphic transfer.
The kwacha was also devalued by 25 percent in May 2022 and since January this year; the local unit has depreciated by 13.1 percent.
