Secretary General for main opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Grezelder Jeffrey says the party will proceed with its planned elective conference next week on 15 and 16 December.
The outspoken Jeffrey made the remarks recently at a press briefing currently underway at the capital city Lilongwe.
According to Jeffrey, the indaba will take place at Natural Resources College (NRC) and people are free to contests in all party positions including that of the president.
“Meanwhile, two people have expressed their interest to contests on the position of party’s president,” said Jeffrey
On Wednesday, DPP’s National Governing Council (NGC) set December 15 and 16 2023 as tentative dates for the party’s elective conference.
However, Party’s President Peter Mutharika through his spokesperson Shadric Namalomba, disowned resolutions made at the meeting.
He said delegates to the meeting were not DPP members but belong to a party that is yet to be formed.
Reacting to the development, political analyst Ernest Thindwa said people should expect the worst from DPP if the party leaders will continue handling things in an undemocratic matter.
On 29th September this year, the High Court ordered the party to hold its NGC meeting and Convention within 90 days.
The opposition DPP has been engaged in unending battles in and outside courts since it was ousted from power in the June 2020 presidential election.
