All set for Mr, Miss Albinism

By Sheminah Nkhoma

Lilongwe, December 8: Association of Persons with Albinism in Malawi (APAM) has organised Mr. and Miss Albinism pageant with an aim of portraying a positive image of persons with albinism.

In an interview with Malawi News Agency, one of the organisers, Maynard Zacharia, who is also National Coordinator at APAM, said they want to empower persons with Albinism by giving them a platform to showcase their talents.

“As we know, persons with albinism face different challenges, like being abducted and killed; now it’s high time that we see something positive. That is why we want to showcase their talents, to show that they can also do anything.

“The event will motivate young people with albinism to gain confidence so that in future they can also become productive people in the country,” Zacharia said.

Zacharia has also urged the public to create a conducive environment for persons with albinism.

APAM President Young Muhamba highlighted the importance of having such events, saying they help in informing the public about the welfare of persons with albinism.

“This is a tool to champion the human rights of persons with albinism, making sure that they are able to interact with the general public, as well as taking part in activities that will help them,” he said.

The event is scheduled to take place in Lilongwe on Saturday, December 9. Mr. and Miss Albinism has been happening in the SADC region since 2019.
