President Lazarus Chakwera has strongly condemned the acts of violence perpetuated by some panga-welding masked men in Lilongwe on Wednesday.

The victims were a group of Concerned Civil Servants who were protesting the proposed 20 percent salary hike.
In a statement issued through his Presidential Secretary Anthony Kasunda, the Malawi leader emphasizes that holding demonstrations is a fundamental pillar of democracy that ought to be respected.
Meanwhile, the president has warned those using political participation or demonstrations as an excuse to incite violence, saying this must not be allowed to tarnish the country’s reputation as a beacon of democracy in Africa.
