Malawi Government has received 192,000 astrazeneca COVID-19 vaccines from the European Union in particular the French Government. Government has also announced that the process of rolling out the vaccines to District Hospitals has already begun.
“We are witnessing a public health emergency situation that continues to threaten lives, livelihoods and economic development of our people. ” No doubt that the situation is not good on the ground as the dashboard continues to show us that we are in critical moments” said Deputy Minister of Health Chrissie Nyakanyasko Kalamula who also expressed hope that that most Malawians will this time around go for the jab to reduce hospitalizations and deaths.
Kalamula has further urged Malawians that getting a jab may help to turn around the economic landscape of the country and avert the dreaded Health and socioeconomic disruptions that the country has witnessed during the two past waves.
Though Malawi continues to register the unprecedented spike, many Malawians are questioning government strategy on combating the pandemic by giving huge amounts of money to Malawi Police instead of channeling the the resources to the places that matter most like the vulnerable societies where most people can not afford to buy a face mask.
So far President Chakwera has not addressed the Nation on the COVID-19 situation in the country as many believe he fears to face the backlash due to the plunder of 6.2 billion kwacha and 17.5 billion kwacha. Other members who were at the Kamuzu International Airport welcoming the vaccines were Principal Secretary of the Ministry, Dr Charles Mwansambo and EU delegates amongst others.
In the past 24 hours, Malawi has registered 801 new COVID-19 cases, 142 new recoveries and 19 new deaths. Of the new cases, 798 cases are locally transmitted: 187 from Blantyre, 138 from Lilongwe, 72 from Salima, 57 from Zomba, 42 from Mzimba South, 39 from Mchinji, 34 from Dedza, 22 from Kasungu, 19 from Dowa, 18 each from Mangochi and Mulanje, 17 from Chikwawa, 16 each from Nkhotakota and Rumphi, 14 from Mzimba North, 13 each from Machinga and Neno, 10 each from Karonga and Nsanje, nine each from Balaka and Chiradzulu, eight each from Palombe and Thyolo, four each from Nkhata Bay and Ntchisi, and one from Likoma Districts while three cases are imported: all are from Dowa District.
19 new deaths were registered in the past 24 hours; nine from Lilongwe, and one each from Blantyre, Salima, Kasungu, Mulanje, Neno, Mchinji, Mzimba South, Dedza, Ntchisi, and Zomba Districts. “No is safe until everyone else is safe”.
