The Public Appointments Committee of Parliament-PAC Chairperson Joyce Chitsulo has refused to comment on Pempho Likongwe’s resignation as Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (Mera) Board Member.
In an interview with a local media on Tuesday, PAC Chairperson Chitsulo confirmed to have received the resignation letter from Likongwe but refused to comment further on the issue.
In a letter addressed to the comptroller of statutory corporation, Likongwe cited his connection with Richard Chapweteka, one of the people that expressed dissatisfaction with the appointment of Henry Kachaje as Mera chief executive officer and reported that to the office of Ombudsman for investigation.
Likongwe is said to have offered advice to Chapweteka to accept his appointment as commissioner for the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) as he was not going to be appointed as Mera CEO.
“I believe that the only Honourable thing to do for my indiscretion of telling Mr Chapweteka that he might not be a successful candidate is to resign from the board,” reads the letter in part.
