The Blantyre City Council (BCC) has with immediate effect banned street vending, wedding ceremonies, bridal showers, engagement ceremonies, night clubs, sporting activities and other social gatherings in the wake of Coronavirus threat.
Recently, Malawi President Professor Peter Mutharika declared Covid-19 as a state of disaster- which has seen closure of both public and private all schools, suspension of hosting of international meetings among others.
The Mayor for Blantyre City Councillor Wild Ndipo announced the development during a media briefing held on Monday at Blantyre Civic Offices.
“ Today I come before you with both sadness that I am taking away some of your most treasured freedoms, and hope that my actions will ensure that you are protected from Corona virus Disease (COVID 19) and do live to enjoy these rights in future,” said Ndipo
COVID-19, which is now a global issue, was first discovered in December 2019 in Wuhan City in China.
The disease has affected several countries in the world including neighbouring countries such as Zimbabwe, Mozambique and Zambia.
Although there no case has been detected in Malawi yet, several stakeholders have quickly responded by increasing preventive measures. )Qjɝ
