Government has announced that it has canceled this years 6th July Celebrations marking 58th Independence and instead will hold only prayers at BICC in Lilongwe as part of austerity measures.
Nankhumwa advised President Chakwera in his statement yesterday that following the economic challenges Malawians are facing, it would be wise to have only National Service of Prayers and cancel all other activities to mark the day.
Agreeing with Nankhumwa’s wisdom, chairperson for the organizing committee Sam Kawale says government has shifted the event from Blantyre to Lillongwe to cut costs further. The initial budget was K300million.
Kawale further says the commemorations will only focus on prayers at Malawi Square-BICC.
Minister of information Gospel Kazako and Sam Kawale chairperson of the organizing committee are currently addressing the media.
