Mzuzu University (Mzuni) on Tuesday donated hand sanitizers to Mzuzu City Council, Mzuzu Prison and Mzuzu Police Station to help fight the coronavirus pandemic.

Mzuni vice chancellor, Professor John Saka said the hand sanitises were produced at the institution by Biological Science and Chemistry Department.

He said as an institution which trains human capital in different disciplines and particularly in science and technology and innovations, they sat down to see how they can contribute to the prevention of further spread of the pandemic.

Saka said: “Our colleagues in biology and chemistry said they would be able to come up with a quality formulation based on standards by WHO as well as Malawi Bureau of Standards.”

He said the formulation was developed under the university’s covid-19 task team.

He said, production of the product was made possible with the university’s resources and called on well-wishers to support the initiative saying the demand is high.

“What we need is raw materials as the team is there. We can make use of the human capital to support the Convid-19 here in Mzuzu and in the north,” he said.

Mzuzu City mayor, Councillor Brian Nyasulu commended Mzuni for the gesture which he described as significant in the fight against the coronavirus.

“When I was told that Mzuni will be making a donation, I thought they bought the products. It is commendable to have a product that is made at the Mzuzu University laboratory,” he said.

On his part, Mzuzu Police Station Officer in-charge, Lovemore Mwabumba thanked Mzuni for the donation saying it was in line with police’s roles of serving lives and property.

“Our role can be accomplished better if we partner with different stakeholders. The hand sanitizers will be used by the officers and the clients that come to police so that we prevent the spread and contraction of the coronavirus,” he said.

In total, Mzuni intends to donate 6,000 of 100ml bottles of hand sanitizers in Mzuzu City.
