Blantyre, June 2: President Dr Lazarus Chakwera on Friday hailed the Zimbabwe government for demonstrating a higher level of generosity during the devastation caused by the recent Tropical Cyclone Freddy.
The disaster gravely affected 11 districts in the southern region such as Blantyre, Phalombe, and Chiradzulu among others.
Speaking at Kapeni Demonstration Primary School ground where the President of Zimbabwe Emmerson Mnangagwa cheered survivors of TCF and also donated a second consignment of food and non-items to the survivors of Cyclone Freddy, Chakwera said: “When the disasters struck, I sent an appeal to different international communities and governments to render a helping hand.
“We were glad that the Zimbabwe government responded positively with relief items to address the immediate needs of the survivors”.
Chakwera then said that Malawi and Zimbabwe will continue to work together in good and bad times for the betterment of the countries’ citizenry.
In his remarks Zimbabwe President Emmerson Mnangagwa concurred with Chakwera that the two countries will continue to strengthen their bilateral ties for the betterment of the people of the two countries.
“Even in the rebuilding process, the Zimbabwe government will support you to reconstruct better and stronger infrastructures to avert future catastrophes,” he said.
He then urged African leaders to start looking for solutions to different calamities that continue hitting the region as a result of climate change.
Mnangagwa said: “One of the solutions is moving people from prone areas to safer ones.”
