USA Appeals for Dialogue in Malawi’s Presidential Elections Case

The United States of America (USA) has appealed for dialogue in Malawi as the country awaits presidential elections case verdict which will be delivered on Monday 3rd February 2020.

USA Deputy Assistant Secretary of State, Matthew Harrington, made the appeal on Friday during a Public Lecture at the Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (Luanar).

Harrington called upon Malawians and all concerned parties in the case to respect, accept and uphold the constitution court ruling.

“As the Constitutional Court case decision is released, we encourage all sides to calmly respect the decision and find common ground through dialogue,” said Harrington

Malawi Government spokesperson Mark Botomani, who also doubles as Minister of Information, assured all Malawians of peace before and after the verdict.

“As the country awaits the presidential election case ruling in the Constitutional Court, the government would like to assure the public that there is going to be peace and calm, law and order before, during and after the judgment,” said Botomani

The United Nations (UN) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) also called upon Malawians to embrace peace and uphold the court ruling.

Opposition political parties namely the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) and UTM Party are seeking nullification of May 2019 presidential polls.
