The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has announced that the Malawi national team, also known as the Flames, will not participate in the upcoming COSAFA tournament.
In a statement released today, FAM cited the tragic passing of Vice President Dr. Saulos Klaus Chilima and eight others, as well as the subsequent 21-day mourning period declared by the government, as the reason for their withdrawal.
The COSAFA tournament is scheduled to take place from June 26 to July 7, but FAM has deemed it insensitive to proceed with preparations and participation in the championship during this sorrowful time.
However, FAM remains committed to the development and growth of the national team and will arrange a series of international friendly matches in the near future to ensure continued preparation and competitive readiness.
The decision has been met with understanding from stakeholders and the general public, who acknowledge the sensitivity of the situation.
FAm has since extended its condolences to the State President, Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera, the bereaved family of Dr. Chilima, and the families of the eight other individuals who lost their lives in the tragedy.
