Chakwera may lose election, warns Zikhale Ng’oma

Malawi Congress Party (MCP) director of strategic planning Ken Zikhale Ng’oma has sounded a warning that President Lazarus Chakwera may lose the 2025 general elections if the party does not put in place a strong executive committee.

Ng’oma made the remarks on Wednesday in Mzuzu as he launched his bid for the party’s deputy president post.

According to Ng’oma, the 50 percent-plus-one vote system is “scary” and the party needs experienced leaders to campaign effectively for Chakwera.

He cautioned delegates against voting for “greedy and selfish” leaders who prioritize their own interests over the party’s.

Ng’oma’s sentiments are a departure from the party’s previous confidence in Chakwera’s ability to win the election with over 60 percent of the votes.

Political analysts agree that the party’s performance in power and the opposition’s aggressive positioning will be crucial factors in the upcoming elections.

The MCP will hold its convention on August 8-10 in Lilongwe, where delegates will elect new leaders, including the deputy president.

Ng’oma’s bid for the post has sparked interest, as he is seen as a strong contender to help Chakwera retain the presidency.
