The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has insisted that the use of correction fluid (Tipex) during 21 May Tripartite Elections did not affect final presidential results.
The Constitution Court in Lilongwe nullified the May Presidential Elections citing ‘gross and systematic irregularities’ a verdict which MEC and President Peter Mutharika appealed to the Supreme Court.
The Court also ordered Parliamentary Public Appointments Committee (PAC) to probe into the competency of current crop of commissioners.
Speaking before the committee on Tuesday, MEC’s Commissioner Linda said the irregularities did not affect the results.
“As it stands the con-court ruling is wrong and MEC awaits final determination from the Supreme Court.
We still maintain that the irregularities had no bearing on the results,” said Commissioner Kunje
Another Commissioner, Ambassador Yahaya M’madi also told PAC that there was nothing wrong with using Tippexed result sheets to determine the results of the May 21 Presidential Elections.
Other commissioners who have already appeared before PAC are Commissioner Moffat Banda, Bishop Mary Nkosi and Elvey Mtafu.
Meanwhile, MEC’s Chairperson Justice Jane Ansah is expected to appear before the committee on Wednesday, 12 February 2019.
